FAQ
Europium oxide is a white powder with a hexagonal crystal structure. Its molecular weight is approximately 270.93 g/mol. It is poorly soluble in water but soluble in acids. Chemically, it is stable but can react with strong acids to form soluble salts. It has a melting point of 1795°C and a boiling point of around 2500°C.
Europium oxide can be synthesized by the reduction of europium(III) nitrate with hydrogen gas at high temperatures, or by the calcination of europium(III) carbonate. Another method involves the thermal decomposition of europium(III) acetylacetonate. These methods yield high purity europium oxide with good selectivity and high yield.
Europium oxide is widely used in the production of phosphors for fluorescent lamps and flat panel displays. It is also utilized in the manufacturing of optical filters, rare earth magnets, and in the development of chemical sensors. Additionally, it is employed in the pharmaceutical industry for the synthesis of europium complexes used in medical diagnostics.
Europium oxide should be handled in a well-ventilated area with proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, goggles, and a lab coat. It is classified as harmful if inhaled and may cause eye irritation. Spills should be cleaned up with caution, and appropriate safety data sheets (SDS) should be consulted for detailed spill management procedures.
